There is no loyalty in Corporate America.
That dream job you did 6 rounds of interviews for can fire you at the drop of a dime — without a heads up. While you’re required to give a two weeks notice if you even consider leaving. And in this economy, that’s the best case scenario, considering companies today are rescinding your job offer before you even start.
It’s not personal; it’s business — or is it? Your name, location, title, and the companies you’ve worked for in the past are under heavy scrutiny the moment your resume gets reviewed. And 9 times out of 10, your resume is buried six feet under everyone else with a tombstone on top. That’s because the hiring manager’s daughter’s boyfriend’s cousin is getting selected for the job.
As a Career Coach turned Recruiter turned Entrepreneur — I’m here to help job seekers regain their power. I know that sounds a bit rambunctious, considering your rent is due in two weeks, and you’re drowning in student loan debt. However, believe me, you lost the war the moment you settled for one stream of income. Most people spend 8 hours a day with a company that can pull the plug on them the moment they find an intern willing to do their job for half the cost.
Life is a game of strategy, and I play an anti-villain character. The streets call me “The Corporate Wolf,” but I call myself “The Job Seekers Advocate” because I’m stepping in to advise you to take an approach many people won’t agree on. For example, it’s okay to be an average employee! Stop working harder and start working smarter. Hard work only gets you more hard work — and maybe a tiny pay increase. Studies have shown that you can make more money job hopping than staying at the same company year after year.
“Companies don’t want to hire job hoppers!”
They’ll find any reason to disqualify you. I’ve once done 5 interviews wearing my naturally curly hair and got denied from every single one. The moment I wore my hair straightened, I made it to the final round with 3 different companies. The wrong company will always find a reason to make you the wrong candidate.
You have to do what’s best for you! That doesn’t mean giving up on Corporate America and walking out of your job. It means to change your mindset regarding your job. Choose to stop allowing them to use you as their pawn in their chess game. Stop relying on others to facilitate your movement up the corporate ladder and keep you paid. Human beings are unreliable, and the moment you’ve digested this fact — is the moment you’re one step out of the matrix.
